The effects of climate change

According to Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), "The Earth's climate is changing. Rising global temperatures will bring changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather.

We need to avoid making the problem worse, so cutting carbon emissions is a priority. But all of us - individuals, businesses, Government and public authorities - will also need to adapt our behaviour to respond to the challenges of climate change."

  • Globally, we have experienced 10 of the hottest years ever recorded since 1990 (records started in 1861)
  • During the 20th century, sea level rose globally between 10 and 20cm
  • Over the last 100 years, temperatures have risen by almost 1°C on average in central England
  • The record highest temperature was on 1st August 2003 at 38.5°C in Kent
  • The UK is responsible for 2% for the total global carbon dioxide emissions
  • The UK has targeted cutting carbon dioxide emissions to 50% below 1990 levels by 2050

Tackling climate change – What needs to be done?
Experts have indicated our approach has to be 3 pronged. We can reduce the harmful effects of our energy consumption by:

  1. Reducing our energy needs
  2. Be more efficient and use less energy
  3. Use more renewable energy sources

These measures not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but will also reduce the costs of energy bills. The following are simple ways you can reduce your energy intake around the home:

  • Generate clean electricity with FREE solar panels
  • Improve your household installation to reduce heat loss
  • Turn off your household appliances completely rather then leaving them on standby
  • Have your heating thermostat one degree lower and ensure your water is set no higher than 60 °C/144°F
  • Install energy efficient light bulbs instead of the standard type
  • When you use the kettle, only boil as much water as you need
